Thaliparambu

Beauty of nature, traditions, architecture and diversity is how India is defined in the tourist lexicon, and perhaps a large portion of the definition goes to the South Indian state of Kerala which is indeed endowed with all the ingredients required to make a place a perfect tourist destination. This is what makes Kerala truly ‘God’s own country’ as it has everything from long stretches of golden beaches bordered by gracefully swaying coconut trees to lush green covered hills and temples and art and culture dating back to ancient times. One such Keralite town bearing testimony of the ancient tradition and art of this magnificent state is, Thaliparambu. Thaliparambu is not quite known on the tourist circuit of Kerala for the fact that it does not have too much to offer to tourists but what it indeed possesses is an ancient temple. Located quite close to the city of Kunnur at a distance of about 28 km, transportation to Thalimparambu is easily available from Kunnur itself and other cities in the proximity. This small town can prove to be a wonderful escape from the regular life and other places of interest with large groups of tourists visiting them through out the year. Apart from the making it a stop over point, you can also add it as one of the excursion points from Kunnur or other city where you are planning to book your accommodation. But visit to Thaliparambu is a must just to have a look at the famous Temple of Rajarajeshwara or Shiva. The derivation of the name of the town has an interesting story behind it and is eternally linked to the temple itself which is wrapped in the Hindu mythology. Legend goes that three Shivalingas were created by Sage Sankara and his associates out of dust from the churning of the disc of the Sun in an attempt to reduce its heat. These Shivalingas were distributed by Lord Shiva’s wife Parvati to three kings of ancient mythology instructing that the Shivalingas must be placed in that land alone which has never had any death of a living being or where no dead object had fallen. Unable to find three different places of such description, all the three kings placed the Shivlingas in the form of ‘Jyotirlingam’ at the same little area of land, atop three plates or ‘thali’. Henceforth, the place came to be known as ‘Thali’parambu. The temple was built at this place by Sage Parashuraman at a later date and it is believed that the temple is thrice more divine than any other Shiva temples in the world due to its receipt of three Jyotirlingams.
