Bekal Fort is counted as the largest fort in Kerala as it covers an area of over forty acres. The most fascinating feature of the fort is that it seems to have been emerged out of the sea with its three fourth of the exterior under the water. It is a heavenly experience as you keep on gazing at the sea waves kissing the citadel.
It is interesting to note that Bekal Fort was never a center of administration like other forts as no trace of palace has been found inside the fort. And it is assumed that Bekal Fort was built to serve some military or security purpose. It is evident from the holes on the outer walls of the fort. Those holes were specially designed for defense purpose. One can even aim the enemies at a distance from the holes at the top of the Bekal Fort. And, when the enemies are nearer to the fort, then, they were attacked from the holes below. In short, the very structure and architectural designs of the Bekal Fort resembles medieval defense strategy. The whole concept of the structure is based on watching each and every minute movement of the enemy.
The Bekal Fort is surely an important place to see among the major tourist attractions in Kerala. The Bekal Resorts Development Corporation is working at the promotion of tourism in and around Bekal Fort. BRDC is just a concrete manifestation of the plans of the Government of Kerala regarding the maintenance of Bekal Fort. Presently the Archaeological Survey of India is being vested with the responsibility of Bekal Fort's protection and preservation.
A visit to the Bekal Fort is a must in order to understand the defense strategy of the rulers of Kerala.
