Air Maldives was the first airline to operate inMaldives and is the national flag carrier of the country. In the 1970’s, this airline service started operating. During the 1990s Air Maldives was in its last phase. Then Air Maldives got a new lease of life by a whole new flow of investment. I again went international. Initially this airline service was operated by the Maldivian government. Later, Air Maldives turned out to be a joint venture of the Maldivian government and Naluri Berhad, who holds the majority of the shares of Malaysian Airlines. At one time Air Maldives started the extending operation and two new Airbuses were purchased. Air Maldives began operating flights to Colombo, Trivandrum and Kuala Lumpur and many other destinations.

In 1999 the operation of Air Maldives dissolved due to bankruptcy. Nobody, including the government was very keen on making the reason of this dissolution public. Once, the deluxe aircrafts of Air Maldives used to connect Maldives to Trivandrum, Kerala. Presently people cannot enjoy that luxury, because the air service of Air Maldives does not exist any more.
